When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dreamed. Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.” The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy. Restore our fortunes, Lord, like streams in the Negev. Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy. Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them.
Pilgrims would sing these ascension songs as they walked up to Jerusalem/Zion. This was likely during the time of Ezra and Nehemiah after the Babylonian exile. There was laughter and dreaming:
“We were like those who dream” (v 1)
“Our mouths were filled with laughter” (v 2)
Additionally, there was proclamation:
“The Lord has done great things” (v 3)
However, we can’t just stay in the glory days. There is still a lot of work to be done: sow with tears. (v 5-6)
We ascend through our dreams
Be a dreamer for and with God. What do you see in the year(s) to come?
2 Corinthians 2:14
But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere.
We are captives of Christ and this will lead to a triumphant procession.
In Psalm 126:2-3 it is repeated twice that the Lord has done “great things”. This is because it is important to remember this.
The ceiling is my faith! Don’t stumble over something in your past.
We ascend through determination
I have to be determined to sow with tears. Tears are connected to love. Unity, for instance, is hard work and takes tears.
Whoever would foster love covers over an offense, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.
Today, we sow seeds by spreading the word of the Gospel.
1 Corinthians 15:1-2
Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.
After that, we will carry sheaves that we can hardly carry, whilst singing songs of joy!
