Luke 17:20-37

Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, [21] nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is in your midst.” [22] Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. [23] People will tell you, ‘There he is!’ or ‘Here he is!’ Do not go running off after them. [24] For the Son of Man in his day will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. [25] But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. [26] “Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. [27] People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all. [28] “It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. [29] But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all. [30] “It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed. [31] On that day no one who is on the housetop, with possessions inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything. [32] Remember Lot’s wife! [33] Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it. [34] I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. [35] Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.” [37] “Where, Lord?” they asked. He replied, “Where there is a dead body, there the vultures will gather.”

The Pharisees and many other Jews were waiting for a messiah to restore the former glory of Israel as in the time of David.

Mark 1:15

“The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

In other passages, he tells us to pray for the kingdom to come (Luke 22:2).

Verse 21 – The kingdom of God is amongst us.

Luke 17:22-25

Spiritual presence of the Kingdom is alive and real now. The physical form will follow later after Jesus’ second coming. Don’t run after false prophets (v23). You will know the day when Jesus returns (v24). Lightning is very powerful and visible. No one will foresee it but all will see it.

Luke 17:26-29

It will be swift just like the flood in Noah’s day (v26).

Luke 17:17-33 – It will be sweet.

We will fully understand and see Christ. I will not think of all the useless everyday objects that we hold so dear today (v31). Life will be preserved (v33).

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. [14] For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. [15] According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. [16] For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. [17] After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. [18] Therefore encourage one another with these words.

Luke 17:34-37 – It will be salty.
