Possession

Introduction

The church possesses many resources. We are rebuilding a church and rebuilding is messy. Some things come/go. Other things get cut too short or stick out still.

Zechariah 4:4-10 NIV

I asked the angel who talked with me, “What are these, my lord?” [5] He answered, “Do you not know what these are?” “No, my lord,” I replied. [6] So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty. [7] “What are you, mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. Then he will bring out the capstone to shouts of ‘God bless it! God bless it!’ ” [8] Then the word of the Lord came to me: [9] “The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; his hands will also complete it. Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you. [10] “Who dares despise the day of small things, since the seven eyes of the Lord that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone in the hand of Zerubbabel?”

We will look at two possessions the first church had and that we have today.

Zechariah 4:6 NIV

So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.

1) God’s Spirit

Galatians 5:16-26 NIV

So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. [17] For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. [18] But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. [19] The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; [20] idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions [21] and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. [22] But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [23] gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. [24] Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. [25] Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. [26] Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

There is the spiritual battle within us. The sinful nature wants to get in the way.

Peaceful yet deep relationships are a sign of spirituality. A lot of conflicts alludes to a worldly mindset.

2) What’s In Our Hands

Zechariah 4:9 NIV

“The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; his hands will also complete it. Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you.

He gave what was in his hands.

What’s in our hands?

A little bit of faith, money, time, etc

Zechariah 4:10 NIV

“Who dares despise the day of small things,

What’s the small thing that is in my hands?

We don’t need to go out and get more. We already have all that we need.

Group Discussion

  1. Which fruit of the spirit does our group need more of this year?
    • How can we accomplish this?
  2. What small things do we already have on hand?
    • How can we use it to build the church?
